Route 36 Highlands Bridge Replacement

Monmouth County, NJ

Rte 23 bridge-Unistress

As the bridge is a gateway to the New Jersey shore towns of Highlands and Sea Bright, as well as the Gateway National Recreational Area at Sandy Hook, aesthetics were of paramount importance in achieving a new bridge which responds to the historical setting and character of the existing bridge. Tight controls over quality and production conditions allowed Unistress to deliver an exceptional structure.

Unistress produced 384 superstructure segments and 100 pier segments in our Pittsfield, MA plant. The match-cast superstructure segments ranged in depth from 11 feet at the piers to 7 feet at the center of the spans and were erected using the balanced cantilever construction method.  Match-cast pier segments were stacked on the cast-in-place foundation and post-tensioned to the previously erected piece.

Since the contractor, J.H. Reid, planned to erect the project using a barge-mounted ringer crane, all segments were trucked to a Hudson River port in Coeymans, N.Y., offloaded to a barge, and shipped to the site.
