Veteran’s Memorial Bridge

Portland, ME

Veterans Memorial Bridge carries 22,000 vehicles per day. Construction of the new bridge began in June 2010 and casting of the 361 precast segments started in July 2010 at Unistress’ central-New England facility. The short timeframe from contract award to first casting required that shop drawings, material procurement, constructability review, and final design proceed concurrently. Unistress ensured that segment dimensions and weights were within practical trucking parameters to minimize shipping costs.

The project was recognized for exemplary safety practices, receiving an award for high standards and employee involvement in creating a safe workplace. The award was presented by representatives of the Bureau of Labor Standards, OSHA, and Maine Senator Snowe’s office, along with MaineDOT Commissioner Bernhardt and Maine Senator Susan Collins. Only two other construction firms in the country have earned this national recognition.
