Excellence in aesthetics and functionality characterize a five-level parking structure at the Albany (NY) International Airport. The project was undertaken by Unistress as part of an extensive renovation of the capital city airport.
The striking precast concrete garage is distinguished structurally by its unique framing system. Acknowledging the need to provide greater user safety, the open interior features “K” frame shear walls and longitudinally oriented “C” shaped moment frames.
Three-sided column covers, hanging grills with ivy; exterior stair towers and perimeter planters all combine to give the facade a three-dimensional appearance. The exterior of the garage compliments the adjoining terminal by combining brick treatment with matching pink architectural copings, sills and spandrels.
An exterior ramp with direct "in and out" access to the second level facilitates short-term parking, while the interior speed ramp, separated from the parking structure by a light well, rapidly moves vehicular traffic through the multiple levels of long-term parking.
Enclosed perimeter walkways, a pedestrian collector and an overhead bridge allow patrons direct access to the terminal with protection from weather and vehicles. The garage was filled within days of its opening. Recognizing the need for additional parking, the Airport Authority awarded Unistress a contract to build a major addition, adding another 830 cars to the existing 1,490 cars.
The project received ACI's award for "Excellence in Conception, Originality and Applicability of Concrete."
