Yankee Stadium Garage Complex, New York City
Yankee Garage A is a two-story parking structure. Because the planned garage would displace a neighborhood recreational park, the City of New York required that the owner find a way to provide for the recreational needs of the local community. In this complex process, we had to satisfy the demands of many NYC departments and agencies.
The solution is a rooftop park with a broad range of amenities, including;
• A regulation size synthetic surface football /soccer field
• An eight-lane running track.
• Four basketball courts.
• Eight handball courts.
• Bleacher seating for 600 people.
• A fabric shade structure to keep visitors cool on warm summer days.
• A comfort station / field house with restrooms.
• A fitness training circuit with misting stations to cool the athletes and drinking fountains.
• Three natural turf mounds to provide observers unique vantage points of the field and court activities.
• Full-size, mature shade trees strategically located throughout the park.
Careful attention to materials, including fiber reinforced soil stabilization, have been implemented to allow for the broadest range of access to visitors requiring wheelchair assistance. The perimeter of the rooftop park is enclosed by vegetation, planted in specially-designed planter spandrels, buffering the park visually, and minimizing street noise.
Exterior spandrels, as well as interior planter walls, are finished with a blend of 4 shades of plant-cast brick, to tie the garage to the neighborhood and green plants of the deck.
Landscape elements have been carefully considered to enhance view corridors and to provide for a diverse mix of ornamental grasses and trees. The rooftop park integrates completely with future landscaping and pedestrian access.
